Beacon Status Autism Accreditation awarded, 2024
Awarded Beacon Status Autism Accreditation. We are now one of only seven schools nationally to achieve this prestigious recognition.
This prestigious award is given by the accreditation panel to provisions that have already achieved an advanced award for their quality and consistency in supporting autistic people. It also recognises outstanding and innovative practices in sharing expertise and knowledge.
The provision needs to evidence exceptional work that significantly impacts how families,
professionals, and the local community understand and respond to autistic
people.
Mr Hicks, Headteacher, commented, “Securing Beacon Status reaffirms our ongoing commitment to ensuring that West Kirby School & College remains a place where all our students can reach their full potential. I would like to extend my thanks to everyone involved, especially our dedicated staff, whose passion and expertise continue to shape and change the lives of our students”.

Advanced Status 'Specialist Award', Autism Accreditation, 2023
We’re proud to announce we have been awarded 'Advanced Status' for our 2023 Autism Accreditation assessment. We’ve maintained our Autism Accreditation status, across our school and residential settings since 2013. This is awarded by National Autistic Society and re-assessed every 3 years.
We aspire to continually provide a high quality learning environment that nurtures, supports and develops our young people. This accreditation celebrates the work our dedicated staff team do to support our pupils.

West Kirby School and College, is described by the National Autistic Society as a place where pupils "feel safe and calm; are treated with dignity, status and respect” and “have breadth of access to, and inclusion, within, community activities. How pupils are supported to take part in activities which are purposeful, engaging and promotes their emotional well-being and social inclusion.”
The report also praised:
- The passion of staff members, which was evident. Their working knowledge of approaches associated with good autism practice
- How pupil support is person- centred, bespoke and tailored to the individual
- How each young person develops skills and confidence
- The efficacy of the School Ambassador initiative
- How lunchtimes in the dinner hall are a positive experience
- The fact that pupils are empowered
- How the School’s residential provision is ‘low arousal’ and homely
- The new School Bakery which will further provide functional opportunities for pupils to practise key skills in communication
Assessors said parents told them, “WKS has achieved amazing things for my son; since starting at WKS my child has flourished, thoroughly enjoying every day in school” and “My child seems so much happier since attending this school.”
A pupil told the assessor “I give this school a 10/10”.

Autism Enhanced Practice Commendation achieved
We're proud to announce National Autistic Society have awarded West Kirby School and College 'Enhanced Practice Commendation'.
National Autistic Society say "Commendations are only awarded to those provisions who go above and beyond general good practice".
This outstanding achievement highlights the individualised provision and supportive strategies we have in places and the amazing work our experienced and well trained staff team all do.

- West Kirby is 1 of 7 provisions in the UK to have received an Enhanced Practice Commendation
- West Kirby School is also 1 of only 4 provisions in the North West to have received Enhanced Practice Commendation
- West Kirby School is currently the only residential school in the Accreditation process to have gained Enhanced Practice Commendation.
- This is the UK's only autism-specific quality assurance programme and the longest running in the world.
Autism Accreditation, 2013.
Established by the National Autistic Society (NAS) and its affiliated local societies, with support from the Department of Health, Autism Accreditation has been the foundation upon which much of the successful expansion of quality services for people with Autism has been built.
In order to achieve accreditation an organisation must provide evidence that:
- It has specialised knowledge and understanding of Autism
- The knowledge and understanding of Autism consistently informs the organisation, the resources and management of the organisation
- The knowledge and understanding of Autism consistently informs the assessment and support plan for people who use our service
- The knowledge and understanding of Autism consistently informs all aspects of practice
- The evidence is evaluated using Autism-specific criteria, which are applied to each area of the organisation reviewed
- The Autism Accreditation award provides a seal of quality and can give people peace of mind when choosing a service
- This is providing all of us as staff members a great opportunity to develop our knowledge and practice with pupils with Autism and to provide consistency and predictability within the curriculum and school environment, which is what so many of them need.
